Alright, I just have to take a second and be a bit nerdy–I am so excited because my sweet fiancé got me an SB-400 Speedlight for Christmas! It is a flash that mounts on top of my dSLR. And the reason I am so excited about this is because if there is one thing I can’t stand, it’s regular, straight-on flash photography. So harsh! But I also don’t like not being able to get good photos indoors if there is not enough light. So that is where the SB-400 comes in. You can adjust the flash to a 90 degree angle, so that the light bounces off the ceiling and not directly at your subject. It makes for a much more natural-looking light. As in, for example, this photo evidence of the fact that my little dog, Chibi, is very good friends with my sister, Laura (Porridge):

Yay! And Shea was thoughtful enough to give this to me before I went home for Christmas, so that I could get some good photos of my family.
Yesterday was our four year anniversary. We celebrated by having dinner at Chez Nous. SO good.

Also, we recently got engaged! This is my engagement ring. I love it!

When: Saturday (12/13) 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. and Sunday (12/14) Noon - 6 p.m.
Where: Maplewood Elementary School in Austin
What: Art fair with work from 60 artists, live music, kids activities, a silent auction, and more.
I’m bringing a lot of brand new pieces to the show, so stop by!
So it has been snowing here in Texas lately! The weather here is so strange, because it snowed during the week but will be back up in the 60s and 70s over the weekend.
I have heard several reports that it snowed here in Austin, but I must have slept through it. That would have brought the “number of times I’ve seen snow in my life” count to a whopping 5!
But here is a picture of my parents’ house in Beaumont, Texas, courtesy my mom. This is actually a bigger deal than some of you in colder climates might think; while it is really rare for it to snow, it is even more rare that the ground is cold enough for the snow to stick.

This afternoon, Shea decided he wanted to drive out to Luling (a small town about 45 miles south of Austin) for barbecue. I’m a vegetarian, so of course I wasn’t interested in the BBQ, but I do love drives in the country and going to small towns.
It was a perfect day for a drive! We stumbled upon this old mill. Then we visited a park across the street, where there was an abandoned building, so of course I had to go inside and take pictures. I love abandoned buildings, the creepier the better, and by that measure this was a good one!

The little building had three rooms, and two of them had trees growing out of the windows. Tightly-packed dirt filled the whole building, about 3-4 feet deep, so that if you wanted do walk from one room to another you had to walk on the dirt piles and crouch down as you went through the doorways. This room looks like it was a bathroom with stalls:

I took lots of photos–as many as I could before I couldn’t handle the creepy feeling anymore!
After we left the park, we discovered that the barbecue place was closed! But this is Texas, and BBQ is never far away. We headed back to Lockhart, about fifteen miles north, and ended up at the Chisholm Trail. Shea liked it a lot, and I got a slice of pecan pie, so I was happy.
On the way back to Austin I made Shea stop at this little cemetery I had seen just before Lockhart. You can see this diorama from the highway, and I wanted to go take some photos:

The cemetery is beautiful–lots of very old stones as well as new ones, lots of personal touches to many of the graves, beautiful representations of La Virgen de Guadalupe everywhere.

This was a nice end to a good weekend!
The festival is tomorrow, October 11, from 10-4, in the Crestview Shopping Center. There will be live music, food vendors, activities for kids, and more. Come visit the maneki booth!

For those of you who don’t know, this is my little dog, Chibi. Chibi is a “jack-chi,” in other words, a Jack Russell terrier/Chihuahua mix. I adopted her about a year and a half ago from a rescue group that specializes in “hard to adopt” dogs. We don’t know exactly what happened to Chibi before she came to live with us, but we do know that whatever it was made her extremely fearful of people. For some reason, she was never really afraid of me–I like to think we were meant to be together!
Which brings me to my good news–Chibi made a friend! When my sister Laura (Porridge to those in the know) was staying over with me during/after Hurricane Ike, Chibi really warmed up to her. It started out gradually; Chibi would jump up on the couch and sit beside Laura, etc. Finally she started climbing in her lap, and before we knew it, Chibi was letting Laura pick her up and hold her. Now, when my sister comes over, Chibi gets totally excited and stands on her hind legs, reaching up for Laura to pick her up.
I am so excited that my little bitty has made a friend! She is a really sweet, funny little dog, but most people don’t get to see that.
Did you know that there is actually a law blog written by an attorney named Bob Loblaw?
In other words, Bob Loblaw’s Law Blog.
HA!
I just added these and many other pieces to the webshop–a lot of cool things happened with my site this week (mostly technical behind-the-scenes things) but what it means for you is that new items are going to be added a lot more frequently from now on. Yay!
